What are EREs?

What are ERE Certificates?

Emission Reduction Units (ERE) are official, tradable certificates that monetize the verified CO2 reductions of electric vehicle charging on a regulated exchange.

Measurable CO2 Reduction

Every kilowatt-hour (kWh) delivered to an electric vehicle displaces fossil fuels and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Tradable Market Certificates

Dispensed kWhs are converted into verified ERE certificates and sold on regulated exchanges to obligated fuel suppliers.

Direct Revenue Generation

You receive the financial earnings generated from your consumed energy directly into your bank account with zero hassle.

Zero Investment Risk

Leverage your existing or planned EV charging points to maximize return on investment with guaranteed compliance.

How It Works

Our 5-Step ERE Process

From initial registration to annual payout: we take care of everything. No worries for you, we handle it all.

01

1. ERE Registration

Register with us using your EAN electricity code and customer ID (active registration for NL, pre-registration for BE). We verify that your chargers are equipped with certified MID meters.

02

2. Charging On-Site

EV charging occurs normally on-site. Our platform automatically captures, logs, and aggregates all transactional kWh metering data in full regulatory compliance.

03

3. ERE Certificates Issued

Verified kilowatt-hours are converted into official Emission Reduction Units (EREs), validated and prepped for the regulated exchange.

04

4. Market Trading

ERE certificates are traded at peak market rates to obligated fuel entities. The proceeds are calculated and mapped with precision per charge point.

05

5. Cash & Annual Payout

You receive the cumulative earnings of all your charge points per location in a single consolidated payout during Q1 of the following year (ongoing for NL, from 2027 for BE).

Requirements & Criteria

What Do You Need to Participate?

Accurate energy metering and certified data collection are essential regulatory requirements for issuing ERE certificates in both the Netherlands and Belgium.

1. MID-Certified Energy Meter

Your charge points must feature an integrated, MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) approved energy meter. Almost all modern commercial and domestic smart chargers have this built-in. We verify this automatically on our platform.

2. EAN Grid Code & Registration

Simply submit your EAN meter code (found on your utility bill). We manage regulatory authorization (e.g., with national emission authorities like NEA in NL or corresponding agencies in BE), automated data gathering, exchange auctions, and payouts.

3. Large Consumers & Audits (> 75,000 kWh)

For standard connections, audits are handled collectively at service provider level. For sites exceeding 75,000 kWh/year or utilizing self-generated solar/battery energy, we manage formal compliance audits via our partner Targray.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About EREs

Find clear answers to questions regarding Netherlands vs. Belgium timelines, pricing, regulatory standards, registration, HOAs/VvEs, lease drivers, and technical requirements.

Netherlands vs. Belgium (2027 Scheme)

The fundamental difference is the launch date and legislative status. In the Netherlands, the ERE crediting system (supervised by the Dutch Emission Authority NEA) is fully active and charging site hosts can immediately claim annual payouts for charged kWhs. In Belgium, national legislation transposing the European RED directives will come into effect in 2027. As a result, no official ERE funds are distributed in Belgium prior to 2027. However, Belgian operators can pre-register now at zero cost with The Charge Grid to ensure full readiness.
Yes, absolutely! We strongly advise Belgian businesses, residential owners, HOAs, and fleet managers to join our Belgium 2027 Pre-Registration. We will pre-verify your MID meter compliance and onboard your charge points to our backend platform. When the regulation goes live in 2027, your charging data will be automatically certified and booked, guaranteeing maximum market yield from day one.

General & Financial Earnings

The ERE compensation is governed by a market mechanism. As such, no fixed guarantees can be made on exact pricing. Payout depends on supply/demand and energy trading dynamics. Typically, market revenues range between €0.10 and €0.30 per kWh (translating up to ~€500 per charger per year).
We receive monthly market price indexes from our trading partners and calculate an annual volume-weighted average market price. Payouts are made in a single cumulative disbursement in Q1 of the following year (ongoing for NL, starting 2027 for BE).

Rules, Registration & Relocation

Yes. Once you no longer hold the EAN connection, we can no longer provide the service for that specific grid point. If you move, the service can transfer to your new EAN code. Please note: under emission authority rules, you may only be registered with one ERE provider at a time. If you terminate mid-year, you cannot switch to another provider during that same calendar year. Cancellation is submitted in writing via your CPO.
No. We pull the charge point IDs and technical specs automatically from the platform based on your customer account, while also verifying MID meter conformity.
For the Netherlands, all ERE claims for a calendar year must be submitted by the end of Q1 of the following year (e.g., before April 1, 2027 for the year 2026). As long as verified charging data exists, the full year can be claimed retroactively. For Belgium, pre-registrations are being processed continuously ahead of the 2027 operational launch.
We adjust and correct this during verification. The customer ID, EAN code, and connected charge points are the primary identifiers. As long as the name matches the utility documentation, minor address discrepancies are easily resolved.

HOAs, Employers & Company Cars

The ERE compensation is paid to the contractual owner of the EAN grid connection (typically the HOA/VvE). The HOA receives the total funds and distributes them according to internal agreements. For multi-charger hubs, we provide detailed reporting per individual socket.
Currently, the EAN connection holder (the resident/employee) receives the payout. In cases where the employer reimburses charging costs, tax rules may consider this taxable compensation or employers may seek to offset it against the home charging reimbursement. Agreements between employer and employee are leading. We are actively developing split-billing features to streamline this.
Regulations are continuously evolving. At present, the EAN owner receives the funds. Clear bilateral agreements between employer and employee (such as offsetting via home charging allowances) are recommended.
The contract holder of the EAN grid connection must register and is the recipient of the funds. Economic entitlement depends on who bears the actual electricity costs (e.g. tenant vs. landlord). Clear contractual agreements are advised.

Technical, Solar & Audits

You may be subject to a specific regime where conversion depends on the actual percentage of green energy generated and concurrency between generation and charging. Due to extra compliance and metering costs, this is usually viable for annual consumption exceeding 75,000 kWh, facilitated through our partner Targray.
Audits are only mandatory for consumption over 75,000 kWh/year or when claiming direct self-generated solar/wind power. For standard small/medium connections, audits are performed collectively at service provider level.
Yes. While our primary focus is on small/medium businesses, residential hubs, and HOAs, large sites (such as logistics depots or transit fleets in NL and BE) are supported through our partnership with Targray, who conducts all mandatory on-site audits and compliance checks.
Yes. However, the ERE regulation does not allow split revenue sharing between CPO and Sub-CPO under single registry; the commission is paid entirely to the designated account holder.
